Kevin Peterson Retires from IPI After 27 Years of Service

Iowa Prison Industries has come to a point that we knew would happen some day, but we were really hoping we could delay it as long as possible: The retirement of Kevin Peterson from the IPI Commercial Team.  Kevin has been a valued employee with our organization since 1999, and his absence from our ranks will be truly missed.

Kevin truly exemplified our mission every single day. He began his IPI career working for the chemical shop in Anamosa selling chemicals to our customers.  He brought previous sales and chemical knowledge to the team with his experience with Brulin, one of our suppliers at the time, and helped our shop get started with our new “Green Seal Certification” line that expanded our offerings and work for the shop.

Kevin then transitioned to my team in Sales and Marketing in the early 2000’s, where he brought a sense of “customer focus” that the team had not seen before his arrival. His ability to build lasting relationships and meet the needs of our potential clients helped the consumable division grow and expand in the years to come.  Kevin is a master at creating a lasting bond between himself and his customer base.  This is extremely evident, as the minute Kevin steps into one of his customers' locations, the staff and his contacts LOVE to give him a hard time, and I have always said that Kevin is IPI’s "Rodney Dangerfield" (he gets no respect).  From a manager’s perspective, you know that your employee is top-grade when you see this happen every time you are with him.  I knew that I had nothing to worry about, because Kevin has cemented the highest level of trust with his loyal customers, and they wouldn't even consider buying from anyone else as long as he is around.

Kevin had countless times throughout his career where he would step up to whatever challenges and changes our organization went through, showing his leadership in moving the direction needed for the best path forward for operations.  From taking over service when he had no experience, to handling the service across the State at all locations, pivoting back to sales focus when we hired a vendor to handle institutional service, and tackling new markets and customers within the Sales organization - uniforms, printing, signs, etc.  Personally, Kevin was my longest direct report within IPI, and he could always be depended upon and proved his ability to perform at high levels regardless of the assignments thrown his way.  He also became a very valuable sounding board and provided valuable feedback on many decisions and directions for the Commercial team and plant operations in the consumable divisions as well.

“Hawkeye” Peterson cannot be duplicated, and I know that we have extremely large shoes to fill for the future.  His special way to put everyone at ease and make all feel welcome and important are traits that are not easily acquired, and he made it look so easy on a daily basis. I can say that I learned as much from him as I tried to help him his entire career working for me and IPI.  He leaves IPI as a personal friend for life, and I hear that we might see him occasionally in Central Iowa in the future as well!

Congratulations Kevin, and best wishes for your retirement-  Enjoy your family, be safe on that motorcycle, and I will always stand behind you on the golf course…..Have a great life.
