On May 18th, Delbert Longley was recognized with the prestigious Iowa Prison Industries Champion Award. This award is given to individuals who go above and beyond in their dedication to IPI's mission and goals through years of service and/or advocacy.

As Chief Jail Inspector for the Department of Corrections, Delbert became a tireless promoter and advocate for IPI's training programs, going out of his way to ensure everyone he dealt with knew about our program and the benefits it brings to all of the citizens of Iowa. Whether it was a sheriff, jail administrator, city manager, or even a deputy, he shared his knowledge of IPI's products and services with them. He even went out of his way to introduce our team to as many potential clients for IPI as he could.

Delbert helped create more work for the incarcerated individuals in IPI's programs, took a genuine interest in seeing them succeed, and ensured that success stories were shared with everyone regarding the positive outcomes of working at IPI. He never missed an opportunity to introduce prospects to the IPI way and lead them there.

As a Champion Award recipient, Delbert received a special plaque engraved at IPI's Anamosa location, a framed letter from DOC Director Beth Skinner, as well as a special IPI Champion jacket. These jackets are embroidered with a large "C" on the left chest, not only to stand for "Champion," but also to mirror the Captain patches worn on the jerseys of NFL players. In their own ways, IPI Champions lead the charge in spreading the mission and contributing to the success of IPI. Delbert officially becomes the 10th person to be awarded with this honor.

Delbert has announced that he will be retiring from the Department of Corrections this summer/fall. Iowa Prison Industries, the Department of Corrections, and all of the county and city law enforcement officials he worked with daily will truly miss him. He exemplifies to the highest degree what it means to be a "Champion." We hope the individuals he meets in the next phase of his life will be as fortunate as we were to be a part of his work career.

Good luck, Delbert. You are truly one of a kind, and best wishes on your future endeavors!
