The Fort Madison Furniture shop, located inside the Iowa State Penitentiary, can produce nearly any wood furniture item but mainly concentrates on office furniture, dormitory furniture and cabinetry. Sales reached a record high in FY14 of over $6 million; the shop typically employs about sixty offenders but reaches upwards of ninety offenders during peak production times.
Fort Madison Furniture operates in a 50,000 square foot Lean designed shop located in the new Iowa State Penitentiary. Previously at the old Iowa State Penitentiary, the shop was located in the original Industries buildings built in 1922 with additions in 1932.
Fort Madison also provides an offender workforce to the Great River Regional Waste Authority (GRRWA). The work crew consists of approximately eight offenders and one staff. At this location, recyclables are sorted, baled and shipped to numerous markets throughout the United States.
