Iowa Code 904-801-904.815. Under the guidance of the U.S. Department of Justice, the State of Iowa is certified to provide inmates for private business, providing the business meets state and federal guidelines.
To be eligible for this program, offenders must be scheduled for release within three years. Iowa inmates that work for private companies surrender their paycheck to the state for payment of their obligations. Inmates can keep no more than 20% of their wages. The balance goes for payment of taxes, child support, restitution, victims’ compensation and room and board. Since inception, Private Sector programs have returned $10.9 million to the State of Iowa.
If your business is interested in utilizing offender labor via the Private Sector program, please contact Dan Clark at 515-725-5705 or dan.clark@iowa.gov to learn more about the guidelines your business must meet. Private Sector programs can be set up at or near the majority of Iowa's prisons.
